Principles of personal survival and basic rescue skills are introduced. The stage-end target is 50 metres of continuous swimming.

Stage 3 adds personal survival and basic rescue. Four strokes are introduced: front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and survival backstroke.

Scull, float or tread
Swim with PFD (clothed)
Clothing for assessment. Assessed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt. Students swim 25 metres and fit a PFD while clothed, simulating falling into the water and needing to stay afloat weighed down by wet clothes.
On assessment day. A green swimming cap is issued to all Stage 3 participants when they arrive at the Centralised Assessment Centre.
