STAGE 4 BRONZE

Bronze. 100 metres across four strokes.

Stage 4 develops confidence and independence in the water, plus general and deep-end water safety. The stage-end target is 100 metres of continuous swimming.

What students demonstrate

Bronze (Stage 4) requires students to swim 100 metres across four strokes and demonstrate rescue and survival skills.

    Clothed survival swim

Clothing for assessment. Assessed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt. Waterlogged clothing increases physical demand and teaches learners to manage drag, simulating real-world scenarios like floods or accidental deep-water entry.

On assessment day. A blue swimming cap is issued to all Stage 4 participants when they arrive at the Centralised Assessment Centre.

Entries & Exits

  1. Compact jump.

Sculling & Body Orientation

  1. Forward somersault in the water.
  2. Scull, float or tread for 2 min.

Underwater Skills

  1. In at least 1.4m deep water, perform feet-first surface dive, swim through hoops on pool bottom for 2m.

Movement / Swimming / Strokes

  1. Swim 100m continuously: 25m front crawl, 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke, 25m survival backstroke.

Survival & Activity Skills

What you wear & carry

Swimwear T-shirt Shorts Flotation aid Goggles
  1. Scull, float or tread water for 2 min.
  2. Clothed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt: swim slowly for 3 minutes using survival backstroke, sidestroke and survival breaststroke (changing every 15m).
  3. Wave and call for help.
  4. Retrieve a flotation aid thrown 2m away and exit the pool.

Rescue Skills

  1. Throw a flotation aid to a partner 2m away and instruct the partner to kick to the edge.

  1. Principles of Personal Safety and Survival.
  2. Environmental Awareness.
  3. Health Awareness.
  4. Emergency Situations and Survival Techniques.
  5. Rescues.
